This website tells the story of A.R.Kinney purchasing two cottages in the 1930’s and the history of his descendants, and their families, enjoying Lake Okoboji.
Brief Summary of the Cottages on Pocahontas Point
Initial Purchase
1930 Alva Raymond (A.R.) Kinney purchases the first (north) cottage (will become 2414 Okoboji Blvd.). A.R.Kinney adds all the plumbing (upstairs and downstairs).
c.a. 1934 A.R. Kinney purchases the second (south, ‘Black’) cottage (will become 2412 Okoboji Blvd.). A.R.Kinney adds kitchen extension, side back porch, upstairs bath, downstairs half bath, under stairs closet.
North Cottage (2414)
c.a. 1946 the north cottage was passed to Ruth (Kinney) and Francis Ross (upon the death of A.R. Kinney) *A letter written by A.R. Kinney actually transferred the dead in October 1941, but maintained ‘control.’
1956 the north cottage was passed to Ruth (Ross) and Walter Olsen (upon the death of Ruth (Kinney) Ross)
c.a. 2011 the north cottage was passed to James, Mary (Olsen) Steiner, and Elizabeth (Olsen) Schulenberg. This was pre-planned by Ruth and Walter Olsen (Walter Olsen did pass in May 2010).
South Cottage (2412)
c.a. 1946 the south cottage was passed to Louise (Kinney) and Howard Platt (upon the death of A R. Kinney) *A letter written by A.R. Kinney actually transferred the dead in October 1941, but maintained ‘control.’
c.a. (need date) the south cottage was passed to Pat (Platt) and Henry Richoux
Ownership of the cottage is unclear. It may have been owned by all four the the Richoux children. John Richoux and his family were the main ones that came to the lake off and on
c.a. 2012 south cottage is sold to Jeff and Susie Zindel (of Omaha). The south cottage is no longer in the family (but they are really good neighbors).
Triangle
(need date) A.R. Kinney buys the triangular piece of land behind the cottages.
The triangle passes to Ruth Ross, Ruth and Walter Olsen, and to James, Mary (Olsen) Steiner, and Elizabeth (Olsen) Schulenberg along with the north cottage.
A-Frame (2416)
(need date) Walter and Ruth Olsen purchase the A-Frame (2416 Okoboji Blvd.) from Ralph Shortley.
2001 Walter and Ruth Olsen sold the A-Frame to Paul Smith (for $725,000).
